eTEP hernia repair, advanced minimally invasive

For complex and recurrent hernias · Apollo Nellore

eTEP is one of the most advanced minimally invasive techniques for complex midline and recurrent hernias. Few surgeons in Andhra Pradesh perform it routinely. Dr. Reddy is trained in eTEP and offers it for selected patients at Apollo Nellore.

01 · Laparoscopic

What is eTEP?

eTEP stands for extended Totally Extra Peritoneal hernia repair. It is a laparoscopic technique that places a large mesh in the layer between the abdominal muscles, without entering the abdominal cavity. This avoids contact with the bowels, reduces post operative pain, and lowers the risk of complications like adhesions or bowel obstruction. eTEP is particularly suited for:

  • Large midline ventral hernias
  • Recurrent hernias after previous mesh repair
  • Hernias in patients who have had multiple prior abdominal surgeries
  • Diastasis recti combined with hernia

02 · Laparoscopic

Why eTEP is a big deal

Traditional laparoscopic hernia repair (IPOM) places mesh inside the abdominal cavity, in direct contact with the intestines. eTEP places mesh outside the abdominal cavity in the retro muscular plane. This means:

  • No mesh against the bowel
  • Lower long term complication rates
  • Less post operative pain
  • Faster recovery
  • Better restoration of abdominal wall function

How Dr. Reddy performs eTEP

  1. 01 3 to 5 ports are placed laterally
  2. 02 The space between the rectus muscle and posterior sheath is developed
  3. 03 The hernia is reduced and the defect is closed
  4. 04 A large mesh is placed in the retro muscular plane
  5. 05 No fixation tacks are needed in most cases

The procedure typically takes 90 to 150 minutes depending on hernia size.

Recovery

Most patients are discharged in 1 to 2 days, return to office work in a week, and resume full activity in 4 to 6 weeks. Pain is significantly less than with traditional open or IPOM repair.
