What is laparoscopic gallbladder surgery?

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the standard treatment for symptomatic gallbladder stones (cholelithiasis), gallbladder polyps, and certain inflammatory conditions of the gallbladder. The entire gallbladder is removed through 3 to 4 small incisions, each less than 1 cm, using a high definition camera and specialised instruments.

Who needs this procedure?

You may need gallbladder surgery if you have:

  • Symptomatic gallstones (pain after meals, especially fatty foods)
  • Episodes of acute cholecystitis (gallbladder infection)
  • Gallstone induced pancreatitis
  • Gallbladder polyps larger than 1 cm
  • Porcelain gallbladder
  • Suspicion of gallbladder cancer (early stage)

Not every gallstone needs surgery. If you are asymptomatic, you may not need any treatment. Dr. Reddy reviews your symptoms and scans before recommending surgery.

03 · Laparoscopic

How Dr. Reddy performs it

  1. 01 Three or four small cuts (5 to 10 mm) are made in the upper abdomen
  2. 02 The abdomen is gently inflated with CO2 gas to create working space
  3. 03 The gallbladder is carefully separated from the liver and bile duct
  4. 04 Critical view of safety is achieved before any structure is divided
  5. 05 The gallbladder is removed through one of the small incisions
  6. 06 Cuts are closed with absorbable sutures and skin glue

The entire procedure takes 30 to 45 minutes for routine cases.

Frequently asked questions

Will I have to follow a strict diet after gallbladder removal?
No. Most patients eat normally within 24 to 48 hours. Some people experience temporary loose motions with very fatty meals in the first month. This usually settles on its own.
Is robotic surgery better than laparoscopic for gallbladder?
For routine gallbladder removal, no. Laparoscopic surgery is faster, equally safe, and more cost effective. Robotics is reserved for complex hepatobiliary cases.
What is the cost of laparoscopic gallbladder surgery in Nellore?
Cost depends on insurance, room category, and any co existing conditions. Send a WhatsApp message with your insurance details for a personalised estimate.
Will my insurance cover this surgery?
Most cashless and reimbursement insurance plans cover laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Apollo Nellore is empanelled with all major insurance providers and TPAs.
