Laparoscopic appendix removal, day-care

Same-day or overnight stay · Apollo Speciality Hospitals, Nellore

Appendicitis is one of the most common surgical emergencies. Laparoscopic appendicectomy is the standard of care, three small cuts, faster recovery, and lower wound infection rates than open surgery. Dr. Dwarakanath Reddy performs both elective and emergency laparoscopic appendix surgery at Apollo Speciality Hospitals, Nellore.

What is laparoscopic appendicectomy?

Laparoscopic appendicectomy is the surgical removal of the appendix, a small finger-shaped pouch attached to the large intestine. It is the definitive treatment for appendicitis (inflammation of the appendix). Three small incisions, each 5 to 10 mm, allow the appendix to be removed safely under camera guidance, with no need for the larger open incision used in traditional surgery.

Who needs this procedure?

Surgery is recommended for:

  • Acute appendicitis, sudden right lower abdominal pain, often with fever, nausea, or loss of appetite
  • Recurrent or chronic appendicitis with imaging-confirmed thickening
  • Appendicular abscess (after initial drainage and a cooling-off period)
  • Appendiceal mass or suspected appendiceal tumour
  • Mucocele of the appendix

If you have sudden severe right-sided abdominal pain, do not wait, proceed directly to Apollo Nellore Emergency. Untreated appendicitis can perforate within 24 to 48 hours.

How Dr. Reddy performs it

  1. 01 Three small incisions (5 to 10 mm) are made, one near the navel and two in the lower abdomen
  2. 02 The abdomen is gently inflated with CO2 gas to create a working space
  3. 03 The appendix is identified, separated from surrounding tissue, and its blood supply is sealed
  4. 04 The base of the appendix is divided with absorbable ties or staples
  5. 05 The appendix is removed through one of the small incisions in a protective bag
  6. 06 If pus is found, the abdomen is washed thoroughly before closure
  7. 07 Cuts are closed with absorbable sutures and skin glue

Total operating-room time is 30 to 60 minutes for routine cases. Complicated or perforated appendicitis may take longer.

Risks and complications

Laparoscopic appendicectomy is a very safe operation. The main risks include wound infection (lower than open surgery), intra-abdominal collection or abscess (more common after perforated appendicitis), bleeding, and very rarely, conversion to open surgery if the anatomy is unclear or contamination is heavy. Dr. Reddy discusses individual risk based on imaging findings before consent.

Frequently asked questions

Can appendicitis be treated without surgery?
Antibiotics alone work in some uncomplicated cases, but the recurrence rate is around 30 to 40 percent in the first year. Surgery is the definitive treatment and is recommended in most cases. The decision is made based on the severity of inflammation, your overall health, and your preference.
Will I have a big scar?
No. Three small incisions, each less than 1 cm, heal to faint marks within a few months. Open surgery, by contrast, leaves a 5 to 8 cm scar in the right lower abdomen.
How quickly can surgery happen if I have appendicitis?
Once acute appendicitis is diagnosed, surgery is usually performed within a few hours of admission. Apollo Nellore Emergency is open 24/7. WhatsApp the practice for the fastest route to admission if you suspect appendicitis.
Will my insurance cover this surgery?
Yes. Laparoscopic appendicectomy is a standard procedure covered by most cashless and reimbursement insurance plans. Apollo Nellore is empanelled with all major insurers.
