Liver tumor surgery, precision resection

• Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC): primary liver cancer, often associated with hepatitis B, hepatitis C, or fatty liver
• Liver metastases: secondary deposits from cancers of the colon, rectum, breast, neuroendocrine tumors, and others
• Benign liver tumors: hemangioma, focal nodular hyperplasia, hepatic adenoma (some need surgery, most do not)
• Cholangiocarcinoma: cancer arising from the bile ducts within the liver

Surgery offers the best chance of cure for most liver tumors when:

• The tumor is confined to the liver
• The remaining liver can support normal function after resection
• The patient is fit enough for major surgery

Depending on tumor location, the procedure may involve:

• Wedge resection (a small piece of liver)
• Segmentectomy (one liver segment)
• Hemihepatectomy (right or left half of the liver)
• Extended resection in selected cases
• Laparoscopic approach where suitable, open for complex cases

The liver has remarkable regenerative ability. Even after major resection, it can regrow to nearly its full size within months.
